Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) secured their maiden win of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 in style by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 6 wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. Chasing a colossal 211 runs, the SuperGiants emerged victorious as Evin Lewis’s thrilling 55*(23) unbeaten knock gave LSG their first win of the season.
Lucknow SuperGiants made a change from their previous game – Andrew Tye replaced Mohsin. Khan in the XI. With an uphill task of chasing 211, the LSG openers started off confidently as both de Kock and captain KL Rahul played some audacious strokes at the top. The boundary came largely as there was a partnership of fifty for the opening wicket and in the 6th over de Kock was left inside the circle by Moeen Ali as LSG were held 55/0 at the end of the powerplay. Rahul hit a maximum smack to complete his hundredth six of the season and the LSG opener was striking in ten overs, with de Kock and the SuperGiants captain getting runs off the bat. De Kock completed his half-century in the tenth over off Bravo, scoring only 8 runs.
LSG had scored 98 runs without any wicket after 10 overs. Dwayne Pretorius brought CSK back into the game by dismissing the LSG captain, who was caught by Rayudu with a quick run into the deep. Manish Pandey was the next man to go after he was caught by Bravo off Tushar Deshpande. After a temporary drop in run-scoring, LSG scored 15 runs in the 14th over courtesy of a six and a four from Evin Lewis, but CSK got the crucial wicket of de Kock. Deepak Hooda was joined by Evin Lewis and the duo collectively hit two sixes and three fours before Dwayne Bravo dismissed Hooda to become the all-time leading wicket-taker in the history of the tournament. With 34 needed from the last two overs, Evin Lewis and young Aayush Badoni scored 25 runs in the final over which included 2 sixes and 2 fours. Aayush Badoni sealed the Super Giants chase in style with maximum power for their maiden win in the tournament.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings, who were asked to bat first, made three changes to their line-up, adding Moeen Ali, Dwayne Pretorius and Mukesh Choudhary to the eleven. Robin Uthappa started CSK’s innings with two brilliant shots for four as Super Kings scored 14 runs in the first over off Avesh Khan.
Bishnoi hit just in time for LSG to dismiss the dangerous Rayudu, who was dismissed for 27.
